In late 2017 and early 2018 part of Tech Art team was working on tools and pipeline for new texturing system to be used for Cyberpunk2077 about which you can read more here:

(Tool itself was made by: Krzysztof Krzyścin, Oskar Świerad, Karol Nerlo, Paweł Kowalski, Karol Kowalczyk and Tymoteusz Głowacki)
Team encountered issues with thumbnails. While main thumbnails could be genereated offline and stored on repository, the one used for previewing material with different parameters could not be. Adding every new parameter type would cause number of necessary pregenerated thumbnails to grow exponentially.
I offered my help and wrote OpenGL Micro renderer in C++, which had it's functionality exposed to Python using Pybind11. In the end it was used for realtime thumbnail, prerendered thumbnails in the library panel and also standalone mesh preview tool.
Thumbnail are handled by my micro OpenGL Renderer.
